June 2005

Thus far it seems that June’s weather is either
- Hot sunny and cloudless or
- Cool rainy and overcast
Today is more of the former. Not that I mind – the sun is good for the soul but if we have an extended period of time with that extreme heat then I might start complaining again.

n the elevator this morning I heard the following conversation (paraphrased because I can’t remember the exact phrasing):
Him: I’ll be away for the next three months.
Her: Where will you be?
Him: Wisconsin.
Her: Well it could be worse. It could be Arkansas.
Him: Yeah.
Her: Though they’re pretty close.
Him: Yeah you can drive there. It’s not too far.
Now let me tell you that Arkansas and Wisconsin are nowhere near what I would call “close” (look on the two maps). I mean sure they’re closer together than Wisconsin and the Moon but that would be a really long drive to go from one state to the other.
Anyway, I guess geography isn’t everyone’s strong suit.

The rumour is that there are geese on a lot of the major highways in the city today. And by on the highway I literally mean on the highway. The OPP must have the quite the headache on their hands.

When I see a picture like this:
stormy
(taken this morning while I was walking from the bus stop)
I have a distinct feeling that it’s going to rain. That signals my brain to hurry into the nearest building because once those clouds break it’s going to be quite the downpour. Over the past couple of days we’ve had some rain and when it has rained it has really rained. Last night we went out for drinks with Rick and Bev and I couldn’t believe how hard the rain was coming down. It was the kind of rain that will flood streets (a la Montreal). In a way this rain is a very good thing because it washes away the humidity and pollen in the air but in another way it can be very dangerous because extreme thunderstorms like these can spawn tornados, flash flooding and treacherous driving conditions.
At least it’ll be easier to sleep in the next few days. A cold front is (finally) coming through.

This deal surprised me. This may not be good for moviegoers because that means that there are really only two competing theatres (at least in Toronto): Cineplex/Famous and AMC. Sure there are a few Rainbow Cinemas scattered around the area but those two will dominate. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of impact this will have.

Look at the smog outside today.
smog
Forgive the quality – it’s taken with my cameraphone.
The smog is making it hard to breathe. I really hope it rains soon because this heat has been really oppressive. At least I have two things related to the weather to be happy about:
- I bought some allergy medicine so that means that I won’t be sneezing and restlessly sleeping (and likely keeping Marcy awake in the process)
- We installed our air conditioner yesterday! Oh man I can’t tell you what a difference this makes. It’s almost like being in a warm apartment and then being in a cool one. The cats are happy now too because they don’t have to pant (they actually pant!) after running around. They can cool off too. Really though it’s mainly for our benefit. Sleeping will be much more comfortable now.
They’re already saying that this summer will see higher-than-normal temperatures. That’s really great news considering that the summer hasn’t even started yet.

I’ve noticed that driving to work on a Friday morning during late spring/summer has been noticeably better than similar days during the fall and winter. I’m not sure why it is; maybe people start their workday later on Fridays or maybe they start the weekend earlier by taking Friday off. I’m not really sure. Driving home in the summer usually isn’t so nice.

I forgot to shave today. Silly me. I hope no one notices and points at me and laughs and says “Ha ha you unshaven freak!”.
Hopefully that doesn’t happen.

Today is Clean Air Day here in Canada. I feel proud that we’re doing our part to clean up the air by carpooling and taking public transit when we can.

I really wish it would rain today (skies are looking promising) because we need something to cool down this ridiculous heat. I haven’t slept very much for the past three days and my body is feeling it. Also the increase in heat and humidity has meant a bonanza of histamines resulting in some serious allergy attacks. I thought that I had eluded these allergies when we moved but I guess they eventually got my forwarding address. That’s one bonanza I could live without.

Sorry for the unavailability of this site over the last few days but there was a power outage on Friday evening that seemed to corrupt my CMOS checksum on this machine. I only got around to fixing the problem last night and thus we are back up and running once again. With any luck I’ll have more time to post but it seems I’ve been saying that too often recently and not really delivering on the promise. No guarantees but I will try!

Here’s something I don’t think I’ll ever get used to – finding out someone in your team is leaving. You never want to start a domino effect.

Taxi drivers I’ve found are some of the worst drivers on the road. But what I think is substantially worse is a taxi driver who is on the phone (without a handsfree attachment). They weave in and out of lanes cutting off whomever they please. It’s ridiculous. This I think is one case where you shouldn’t be allowed to call while on the job. It could be just too dangerous.
