It’ll be nice to get back to being a little more productive now that this has transpired.

How do you keep your poppy safe?
This is a problem I face each and every year around this time; I donate for a poppy and then a few days or in some cases the same day the poppy disappears somehow even when I put tape on the end of the pin.
Update: The Toronto Star discusses the same issue. I sense a meme.

An addendum to my previous post about finding time to read would be pointing to Anil Dash’s post about TL;DR. That means “Too Long; Didn’t Read”. When I don’t have time to read my feeds in my RSS reader I tend to just skim through posts, pressing “J” at a frantic pace (“J” advances to the next post in your subscriptions). I barely notice what is going by my eyes. I feel badly but I know that I don’t have the energy or time to read that many posts and absorb everything to the point that it deserves. I figure that if it’s really something that I want to read later I’ll either add it to del.icio.us or I’ll star it and come back. There’s so much information available to us and our time is at such a premium that not everything clamouring for attention will win. I just hope that the things that I do decide to read are worth my while.
My arms hurt so it must mean one thing: raking leaves. This afternoon I managed to rake the front yard of our house and as a result acquired 9 full bags of leaves. The weather over the last several weekends has been truly dreadful; if it wasn’t raining then it was hyper-windy and windy is not a good weather condition to choose to rake leaves in. Today finally was a good enough day for me to get some of the raking done. It’s a little depressing that we still have the side and back to rake but at least the front looks a lot better. I was a little embarrassed because in last week’s wind storm a lot of the leaves from our tree swept onto our neighbour’s yard and when he saw me starting to rake this afternoon he came outside and raked his lawn too. Ah, competition and oneupmanship.
Anyway my arms right now are complaining about all the work I made them go through earlier today so I will probably have to rub some BenGay or something similar before I go to sleep. In fact right now when I close my eyes I daydream about raking. Yes I am an exciting man.
This is quite the amazing piece of art [via]. I can’t imagine how long it takes the artist to create these works.

Usually, at least over the past few months, when I read my RSS feeds (in my reader), there are a lot of posts that I don’t have time to read in depth so I skim it. If in the first few seconds of reading (using the Blink technique) I don’t find it interesting then I skip it (marking it as read) and then it doesn’t come back again.
I feel badly about this sometimes because I know that there are posts that I would really find interesting if only I had the time to read and absorb them properly. I say absorb because it’s not enough to simply read about something. You need some time to reflect upon what you’ve read and internalize it somehow so that you hope that it will become useful some point in the future.
Today though I took a different approach. I decided to spend a little more time when I’m reading my RSS feeds and the blogs that I usually don’t have time to read in depth (usually the management/lifehack-related ones) I will make a concerted effort to pay attention to. I think it paid off quite handsomely too. I read some terrific posts and posted a few on my del.icio.us feed to read later.
I’m thinking of posting about what I subscribe to and offering my OPML file for perusal but that will have to wait. This period of time in my life may inspire me in ways that I didn’t know I could be inspired. Acquiring knowledge is a continuous process for me and recently the rate that that process occurs has been increasing.

I saw this sign near the McDonald’s near work today advertising their Monopoly contest:
Want to win some cash*?*Payable by cheque.
I found that to be quite humourous.
This Hallowe’en we only purchased 4 pumpkins for decoration outside. I say “only” because last year we had 10. That was partly because we had a Hallowe’en/housewarming party last year and we wanted the house to look festive.
Anyway so when I left the house this morning to catch the bus I was quite surprised that all 4 of our pumpkins were still intact. Not one was destroyed or smashed or taken away during the night by roving hooligans. Contrast this to last year when, if I recall correctly, at least one of our pumpkins was destroyed.
The trick-or-treaters that came to our house this year were far more numerous than last year. Last year we had people walk right by our house even when we were standing outside on the porch with the light on beside a jack-o-lantern. It was quite discouraging. This year we had all ages come to the door. I tried to keep the cats from escaping out the front door and Marcy, Andrew and Scott handed out candy. The one odd incident was when I had to pull Pumpkin to the door and Marcy got up to hand out candy to a bunch of teenagers. It looked like they were about to open the door and then they were rough-housing on the porch. Marcy managed to calm them down using her teacher voice (it’s quite scary) but it was an anxious moment to be sure.
Now it’s November and there are only 2 months left in the year. This year has seemed interminable and lightning-quick at various times. The next few months will prove to be very interesting both professionally and personally. All will be revealed in time though.
